The MicroMed Solutions division of LasX Industries has seen a lot of changes this winter, and is proud to announce both a new logo identity as well as the appointment of Thomas Daul to the position of Manager of the group. With over 15 years of experience at LasX, Mr. Daul’s extensive background in medical device manufacturing and laser converting will benefit customers as they develop manufacturing solutions for their products.
As a market leader in the medical diagnostics industry, MicroMed Solutions specializes in the development and high-volume manufacturing of polymer microfluidic structures and related components. Mr. Daul previously served as Program Development Manager for MicroMed Solutions, helping customers develop their products from prototypes to full-scale production. He is enthusiastic about the direction of this new position. “After over a decade of involvement in this market and understanding where the industry is heading, it’s exciting to be able to drive our technology to meet the needs of our customers,” said Mr. Daul.
Looking ahead, MicroMed Solutions sees new opportunities to expand on current LaserSharp® technologies to not only to build multilayer fluidic laminates more cost-effectively, but to also add value in manufacturing a fully loaded point-of-care device. This will incorporate dispensing of chemistry, reagent packs and the final component build so that fully functional devices can then be packaged and distributed. “Helping our customers bring these next generation medical devices to market has always been a rewarding part of working in this industry,” Mr. Daul adds.

The 2013 SGIA Printed Electronics & Membrane Switch Symposium serves as an industry gathering point for printed electronics and membrane switch professionals looking for the latest technology updates and new innovations from leaders in the industry. This year, LasX is pleased to have been selected to present during the two-day symposium. On October 23 at 1:00 p.m. Dean Laird, LasX Precision Converting Manager, will join industry colleagues to present Finishing with Cutting Technologies.
Finishing with Cutting Technologies
Manufacturers of printed electronic components face numerous challenges throughout the development and production phases. As the demands for shorter lead times and smaller quantity runs increases, so too does the need for a more cost-effective, versatile manufacturing solution. Added challenges include the need to achieve complicated geometries as well as obstacle of tackling difficult to process adhesives and substrates. These issues require new approaches to address the difficult jobs that are problematic for traditional die cutting.
Digital laser processing has emerged as a more flexible, efficient method of production for a wide variety of electronic components by eliminating the cost and downtime associated with metal tooling, machine setup, and design alterations. This session will cover the ways in which innovative laser technology is changing the way manufacturers fabricate accurate, functional electronic components.
Key takeaways include:
• Advantages of using laser processing over conventional die cutting and the ways in which it solves production challenges such as difficult to process materials.
• How digital technology influences the development and production of prototype components, shortening a product’s time to market.
• Ways in which lasers can provide benefits using multiple process manufacturing, including the ability to cut, kiss-cut, and perforate in a single production step.
About the SGIA Printed Electronics & Membrane Switch Symposium
The symposium programming is made up of high-level presentations from expert speakers focused on best practices, market trends, current technologies and future opportunities for a wide range of vertical markets and applications, including:
• Better Methods of Screen Printing
• ASTM & IPC Standards
• Surface Mount Technology (SMT)
• Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
• Light Guide Panels (LGP’s)
• Mesh Selection & Stencil Preparation
• Inks for Decorative and Functional Uses
• Finishing with Cutting Technologies
• Finishing with Dimensional Forming
This event is ideal for engineers, technical leaders, and industry suppliers/manufacturers who wish to learn about cutting-edge technology developments and advanced production methods impacting the printed electronics and membrane switch manufacturing processes. We hope to see you in Orlando!
As a leading US manufacturer of laser cutting systems and equipment, we believe in celebrating the manufacturing industry and its important impact on our nation. The second annual Manufacturing Day is an event dedicated to just that: taking time to reflect on the significance and necessity of manufacturing while looking forward to the future of the industry.
Why is manufacturing so important?
The statistics below further support the benefits of manufacturing to our economy and workforce. According to the National Association of Manufacturers:
• In 2012, manufacturers contributed $1.87 trillion to the economy, up from $1.73 trillion in 2011. This was 11.9 percent of GDP.
• For every $1.00 spent in manufacturing, another $1.48 is added to the economy, the highest multiplier effect of any economic sector.
• Manufacturing supports an estimated 17.2 million jobs in the United States—about one in six private-sector jobs.
• Nearly 12 million Americans (or 9 percent of the workforce) are employed directly in manufacturing.
So what is Manufacturing Day?
Manufacturing Day, or MFG Day, is an event created to illustrate the importance of manufacturing to the nation’s economy and also to create awareness about the rewarding, high-skill jobs which exist in manufacturing fields. Manufacturing Day also seeks to address common misconceptions about manufacturing by giving manufacturers an opportunity to show, in a coordinated effort, what manufacturing is and what it is not.
This year’s celebration is co-produced by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), the National Association of Manufacturers, the Manufacturing Institute, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP).
Tell us, how do you plan on celebrating manufacturing this year?
